South Africa
South Africa is a huge market for chemicals – the largest on the continent of Africa for most chemical raw materials. South Africa is more sophisticated than the rest of Africa. Many international manufactures are there including Unilever, Colgate, Diversey, and J&J. Also SA has some major home grown companies eg Modi, Sappi, NCP, AECI, SAB etc. These large companies in most cases supply the region – usually as far north as Kenya.
The South African economy has been doing very badly the last few years – the Rand has plummeted, unemployment is high, inflation and interest rates are high and growth is low. As a consequence importers are very price conscious and virtually all basic chemicals are now bought from China or India. The exception being the more specialised chemicals or where the importer specifically wants European quality.
Some of the major manufacturers import directly but the majority of chemical imports are made by importers / distributors. Selling to this market is tricky and requires a lot of knowledge for example appointing one sole distributor to sell an overseas product would be very limiting volume wise because the market would be shut off via the other distributors that all have their unique positions. Cayley Chemicals understands this market and would be pleased to help potential exporters.
