Thirty years ago the UK was very strong in chemical manufacturing. For many years the biggest company was ICI Plc, initially based on Soda Ash. I worked for ICI after university in the 70’s and they were very strong in manufacturing many basic chemicals plus some speciality products. The second largest UK chemical company was Albright & Wilson, a major manufacturer of phosphates and detergent raw materials. I worked for A&W for 10 years where I gained my initial knowledge of international trade.
The UK chemical industry peaked in 1986 but since then China, India and other low cost countries have taken over production of most basic chemicals. Today the UK, in terms of manufacturing, is a shadow of its former past but it still plays an important role in the manufacture of speciality chemical products and the distribution of imported chemicals.
This speciality chemical manufacturing sector thrives in the UK because the technology is good, the products are top quality and the prices are competitive. We export many of these products throughout our trading area. In addition to speciality chemicals, the UK is strong in disinfectant raw materials. We supply on a regular basis from the UK to Nigeria mixed Fcls including:
